nov 18 Learn More Time Zones Created


Time zones were created on this day in 1883. Why? The railroad. Before the four continental zones that we know today were established, every town operated on its own local time based on the position of the sun. As you might imagine, this was a scheduling nightmare for American and Canadian railroads. So they pulled rank and said, "Yo! America and Canada, you know what time it is? Whatever time we say it is." The railroad was essentially North America's lifeline back then, so everybody was cool with it, although Congress didn't make it official until 1918.
