About Me

Intro

Here's the deal. I'm a nerd, but not the stereotypical, pocket-protector kind of nerd. I'm a nerd who cares about the world and wants to make it a better place. A nerd who gets all hot and bothered about topics as varied as Virginia Woolf, Middle Eastern politics, and evolutionary biology. A nerd who wants to stay up late arguing about the latest David Lynch movie or picking up a second or third language, perhaps.

Just cause I'm a big ol' nerd doesn't mean I don't know how to have fun. I'm a short T (read: subway) ride away from Boston, and I make the most of what the city has to offer. I've also been known to play a mean game of flip cup.

Name

I'm Jumbo the Elephant. No, really.

Hometown

Tufts is right on the border of Medford and Somerville, MA. Two hometowns means double the fun.

Birthdate

1852

Body Type

I'm a sweetly medium-sized university. With about 5,200 undergrads and 5,600 grad students, I'm big enough to provide research and service opportunities, but small enough to provide a bunch of small classes that let my students get real chummy with professors. The main campus is in Medford/Somerville (where you'll be if you're an undergrad), but my med school is in Boston, my dental school is in Grafton, and I've also got a satellite campus in Talloires, France. Phew. Yeah, I'm kind of a big deal.

Current Living Situation

Almost all freshman and sophomores live on campus in dorm rooms with roommates. Some singles are available if you're special or really, really lucky. Juniors and seniors sometimes live in on-campus apartments, but more often than not, they rent houses that are just off campus. There's definitely a real community feel to living at Tufts. On campus or off, my students are tight.

Relationship Status

We're pretty friendly with other Boston area schools. In fact, we're part of the Boston Consortium, which is all about sharing resources among Boston-area colleges and universities. As far as sports go, we're part of NESCAC, the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Politics

Tufts is most definitely a left-leaning school. Sure, there are conservative groups on campus, but your average Tufts student is politically progressive. You'll find a whole lot of Obama, Planned Parenthood, and LGBTQ bumper stickers around campus.

You should apply to me if...

you're an enthusiastic nerd who wants to stay up late talking about all the ways you're going to change the world.
