Tufts University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Global citizenship. I'm all about my students being in tune with the global community.

  • Travel abroad programs. I've got all kinds of programs and I want you to take advantage of them. Or else. Just kidding...maybe.

  • My International Relations major, both tough and totally worth it.

  • Service. There are approximately one billion (rough estimate) service groups on campus, so trust me when I say there's something for everyone.

  • Engineering. My program produces some pretty stellar engineers, if I do say so myself.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A very warm winter jacket. New England winters can be brutal.

  2. A passport. You don't want to be that one uncool kid who doesn't study abroad, do you?

  3. A map of the T. There are so many awesome museums, shows, restaurants, and bars (once you turn twenty-one) to take advantage of in Boston.

  4. Some comfy shoes. The Medford/Somerville campus is one big (gorgeous, leafy) hill, which you'll likely trek up and down multiple times per day. Hey, at least you'll get fit in the process.

  5. Emotional openness and receptivity to the world around you. Sounds hippie-dippie, I know, but I want to make you think new thoughts. Expand your mind, dude.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • I've gotten a lot of press for my odd application questions. Like that time I asked prospective students what "YOLO" means to them.

  • My mascot is Jumbo the Elephant, the most inspiring yet ridiculous mascot ever.

  • I've got an impressive reputation in the field of International Relations and I'm home to the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy—the oldest grad school for IR in the country. As you may have guessed, I graduate a significant amount of future diplomats and government workers.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

It totally depends. Sometimes, I'm chillin' in a friend's dorm room or catching a movie in downtown Boston. Other times, I might be grabbing a beer in Davis Square or hitting up the music clubs in Harvard Square. Hey man, sometimes I'm even at a frat party. Every Saturday night is different at Tufts. That's how I like it.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Brown 'n' Brew

  • The Campus Center

  • David Square. It features some incredible food options: J.P. Licks, Anna's Taqueria, Redbones, and some lovable dive bars.

  • Soundbytes. It's got the best brunch in town.

Quirks:

  • I offer combined degree programs with the SMFA (the School of the Museum of Fine Arts) and with the New England Conservatory of Music. These programs provide opportunities for folks to hone their artistic skills and study organic chemistry at the same time. Whoa.

  • I really want you to study abroad. You can attend Tufts study abroad programs all over the world—Ghana, Paris, London, Chile, Hong Kong…and that's just the beginning.

Famous Alumni:

  • Elaine from Seinfeld

  • Dr. Melfi from The Sopranos

  • Bill Richardson and Scott Brown, politicians

  • Michelle Kwan

  • Tracy Chapman and the members of the band Guster

  • Pierre Omidyar, the founder of Ebay
