University of Cincinnati

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Design. Everything your crotchety friend thinks is pretentious, we do really, really well.

  • Co-ops. Leading in paid internships since forever.

  • College of Music, which is singing and dancing and general spirit finger glamor.

  • Being in close proximity to more Indian restaurants than any other college campus.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Enough Bearcats swag to deck yourself out for a game.

  2. An iron stomach. This is home of the (in)famous Skyline Chili...

  3. Transportation to go home or to the store or to a restaurant or...anywhere, really.

  4. A waterproof jacket to combat the erratic weather.

  5. Bravado. Some parts of town are a little sketchy. It's best to walk tall.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • UC was one of the leading schools in the excavation of Troy. You know, the city from that Brad Pitt movie.

  • You stop sneezing in the spring because of UC-created Benadryl.

  • We used to be really good at basketball.

  • The Golden Gate Bridge was designed by a design school grad. Bam.

  • Ever heard of, I don't know, a little ol' American president named William Howard Taft? The one that supposedly got stuck in a bathtub? He was a graduate.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

I'm probably in the city chowing down at any one of the new restaurants on Main, Vine, or Sycamore. Or drinking craft beers at one of the renovated breweries. I might even be at one of Cincy's many festivals or dancing wildly at Japp's. The underage crowd is probably in or around campus taking in a movie, or participating in one of the many intramural sports leagues.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Christy's, Murphy's, Woody's, and any other bar that ends in a "y." Skyline after dark.

  • Nippert Stadium/Fifth Third Arena or at my home TV cheering against Louisville, Xavier, and Pittsburgh.

  • In studio, having a work party…for those DAAPers out there.

Quirks:

  • While the student body does a lot of things together, most programs have their own culture. A seasoned UC veteran could pick a DAAP kid, a CCMer, and a business-schooler out of a crowd.

  • UC invented the cooperative system. People often make friends freshman year and then don't see them for two years because of different co-op schedules. Sigh.

  • UC president Santa Ono is hilariously hands-on when it comes to running UC. It's not uncommon to find yourself mentioned in one of his speeches or Tweets.

Famous Alumni:

  • Sandy Koufax, Kevin Youkilis, and Oscar Robertson are all graduates. (Non-sportsball fans may want to refer to Google at this time.)

  • George Clooney

  • Stephanie Heinrich

  • Ethan Allen
