The Birthmark

The Birthmark

by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Aylmer Timeline and Summary

  • We learn that Aylmer is thoroughly devoted to science, and recently got married to the lovely Georgiana.
  • Though Georgiana thinks her birthmark is attractive, Aylmer takes issue with it. And the longer they're married, the more issue he takes.
  • Because he can't hold back any longer, he tells his wife that he doesn't like her birthmark. When she asks about removing it, he jumps on the opportunity.
  • Aylmer sets up a boudoir for Georgiana in a little room in his laboratories. He brings her in there and shows her all his science stuff.
  • When his wife cries at reading his lab notebook, Aylmer comforts her and asks her to sing for him.
  • Aylmer is upset when Georgiana comes into the lab where he's working. He's been pretending to be A-OK with the impending operation, but she catches a glimpse of his hidden anxiety.
  • He is pleasantly surprised when his wife wants to do the operation anyway.
  • Aylmer brings the vial of liquid in to his wife. He demonstrates its abilities on a blotchy plant conveniently placed on the windowsill.
  • Aylmer watches over his wife as she sleeps after drinking his elixir. He is joyous when the birthmark is finally gone.
  • Aylmer watches his wife die and hears Aminadab laugh.
