Dartmouth College

About Me

Intro

Hi, there. My name is Dartmouth College, the dear ol' college on the hill. Located in a small New England town with lots and lots of trees, I tend to be pretty crunchy around September. Nothing is better than a long canoe ride or hike—as long as I have my granola and Annie's mac-n-cheese handy. I can also be pretty preppy, but not as much as some of my other Ivy League friends. Oh, and shame on me if I forget to mention my athleticism. From varsity to club to IM sports, I like to compete as often as possible.

When it comes down to it, the most important thing you should know about me is that I am smart. On any given day, you can find me snuggled in the library with my KAF latte and forty-page PDF on the transatlantic diaspora. Despite all the fun activities I do, I also must remain dedicated to carrying on Dartmouth's legacy. My motto is vox clamantis in deserto, after all. That's Latin for "a voice crying out in the wilderness." If that doesn't inspire you to achieve greatness, I don't know what would.

Name

I am the Dartmouth Big Green. Don't underestimate me—it's truly a color to be feared. Besides, if that doesn't scare you, my unofficial mascot is Keggy the Keg. Talk about intimidating.

Hometown

I'm located in Hanover, New Hampshire. You may have heard of it—CNN recently ranked my hometown the second best place to retire in the country.

Birthdate

I was born in 1769. I may be older than the Declaration of Independence, but people often tell me I look great for my age. My beauty is known to be timeless.

Body Type

With a little over 4,000 undergraduates, I'm probably not the biggest school you're looking at, but my small size works for me. Students don't feel limited by the number, nor do they feel lost in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Besides, the cozy and infamous "Dartmouth community" is what makes me so special.

My limited number of students also helps me from overcrowding. Even though I own over 30,000 acres total, my campus only takes up 269 acres. That's around .4 square miles. You'll appreciate it when there's a blizzard and you have to get to your 8:45AM class and the walk all the way across campus takes you all of eight minutes.

Current Living Situation

Most of my students reside in dormitories, as everyone is guaranteed on-campus housing for four years. With recent renovations, these digs can be pretty sweet. Many students will be lucky enough to have their own room, not to mention elevators for those days when the stairs are just too daunting.

Some students also choose to live in their Greek houses, affinity houses, or in apartments. Though these are considered "off-campus" options, they are almost as central to campus as on-campus housing. Like I've said before, I'm not all that expansive.

Relationship Status

We're part of the ye olde Ivy League, a group of eight private institutions located in the Northeastern United States. Most of us were founded during the colonial period, so we go waaay back. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean we've always been friendly. Relations with Princeton have been particularly murky, especially when it comes to hockey. If you ever attend that game, watch out for all the tennis balls. My students like to throw them after our first goal. Don't ask them to explain it, though—it's just tradition.

Politics

Students here are known to be politically active, but you'll get a good mix of political leanings on my campus. If you feel so inclined, you can join the College Republicans, College Democrats, Dartmouth Progressives, or Dartmouth Libertarians.

If you're feeling a little less dedicated, you should still attend the various political events pertaining to the U.S. presidential election. It's a pretty big deal here. With New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, candidates normally come to campus to duke it out. Fun rallies and lots of shouting are involved.

You should apply to me if...

you would describe yourself as crunchy, bro-y, or nerdy, and you want to receive the best education money can buy.
