Source: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Speaker: Lorelei Lee

I always say a kiss on the hand might feel very good, but a diamond tiara lasts forever.

Context

This line is spoken by Lorelei Lee (played by Marilyn Monroe) in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, directed by Howard Hawks (1953).

Marilyn Monroe was at the top of her game in this smash hit movie-musical, in which she does her iconic performance of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." In this movie, based on the Broadway musical, Marilyn plays Lorelei Lee, a gold-digging showgirl who travels to Paris with her non-gold-digging showgirl friend, Dorothy (Jane Russell). The line comes when Lorelei is flirting it up with Sir "Piggy" Beakman, an old fat guy with a diamond mine.

Where you've heard it

What you've heard more than this exact quote are references to Marilyn's performance of "Diamond's are a Girl's Best Friend." Most famously, the performance was the inspiration for Madonna's "Material Girl" video. We're guessing you might also have seen the episode of Glee that paid homage to this by having the girls perform a mash-up of both songs.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's from a classic movie, so a few people might think you're a snob. The rest will just think you're a gold-digger.
