Speaker: The Blue Fairy

A lie keeps growing and growing until it's as clear as the nose on your face.

Context

This line is spoken by the Blue Fairy (voiced by Evelyn Venable) in the film Pinocchio, directed by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske (1940).

It's the story of a puppet who will become a real boy if he can prove his bravery, his honesty, and his selflessness. No, it's not Justin Bieber's life story (he will always be a puppet), it's Pinocchio, a tale popularized by Walt Disney in 1940.

In the Disney version, Pinocchio's moral guide—the Usher to his Bieber—is the blue fairy, who tells Pinocchio, "A lie keeps growing and growing until it's as clear as the nose on your face." And we all know that the nose on Pinocchio's face gets clearer and clearer with each subsequent lie.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if someone is telling you that honesty is the best policy—in as cutesy a way as humanly possible.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

No lie, gang—this quote about truth-telling isn't very pretentious at all.
