Source: Sons of the Desert

Speaker: Oliver Hardy

Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!

Context

This line is spoken by Ollie, played by Oliver Hardy, in the film Sons of the Desert, directed by William A. Seiter (1933).

This classic Laurel and Hardy catchphrase first showed up in their movie The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case, but it also pops up in nearly all of their films, including one of their best—Sons of the Desert.

But that's kind of the point of a catchphrase. It's catchy.

Basically, whenever Stan would get Oliver into some kind of trouble (which was a lot), he would tell his long-time friend, "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!"

The line comes up in different forms throughout their movies. In Thicker than Water, Oliver tells Stan, "Here's another kettle of fish you pickled me in!" and in Saps at Sea he says, "Here's another nice bucket of suds you've gotten me into."

Sure, those are good, but you can't go wrong with a classic.

Where you've heard it

Most people have probably heard this phrase, even if they didn't know it came from Laurel and Hardy. It's basically just a lighthearted way to blame another person for all your troubles. Finally!

Additional Notable References:

  • Laurel and Hardy starred in a movie called Another Fine Mess, which is weird because the line is "another nice mess."
  • That shouldn't be confused with the 1973 movie, Another Nice Mess.
  • Need a complete list of all the Laurel and Hardy movies with this catchphrase? Of course you do.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

The line is meant to be funny, so you shouldn't come off as too pompous. Though, seriously, maybe you got yourself into the mess this time.
