Be the ball.

Context

This line is spoken by Ty Webb (played by Chevy Chase) in the movie Caddyshack, directed by Harold Ramis (1980).

Caddyshack is a sports comedy movie set at the wackiest golf club that ever existed. The highlight of the movie is when the groundskeeper, played by Bill Murray, gets into a battle to the death with a gopher. Of course, this quote has nothing to do with that and instead comes to us from slick golfer Ty Webb as he gives a young caddy some Yoda-like advice.

Where you've heard it

The quote is definitely popular in the golf world, like with this documentary on what it takes to be a great golfer. It's also the name of a line of sportswear, so don't miss that.

Other parts of the movie have also been spoofed on Happy Gilmore, Family Guy, and American Dad.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We know it's about golf, but still—we doubt anything Chevy Chase has said has ever been super-pretentious.
