Source: Blank Space

Speaker: Taylor Swift

I've got a blank space, baby, and I'll write your name.

Context

This line is from the song "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift, from the album 1989 (2014).

Taylor made Billboard history with this song when it became #1 after knocking another of her songs, "Shake It Off," out of the top spot. Not too shabby.

With this song, Taylor mocks her rep as a total man-eater. The media paints her as a serial dater who goes though men like a pop star goes though clothes, and she embraces that image for this satirical smash hit.

The "blank space" in question is the opening for the next lover in line, who she'll most likely tear apart. Kind of like she does to the guy in her video, who goes through all kinds of torturous times with Taylor. (Yay, alliteration.)

Where you've heard it

Maybe you saw the line referenced in the title of this article in the Mennonite World Review. Or maybe not. There was also this article, which tries to make an issue of the cost of the song's video with the title "Give Me a Blank Check Baby, And I'll Write Your Name."

Of course, the most likely place you heard this line is from Taylor herself, who can be heard chirping it in all the usual places that #1 pop songs are chirped.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Taylor is totally making fun of her image with this one, which is a guaranteed way to avoid pretentiousness.
