Speaker: Elsa

"The cold never bothered me anyway."

Let the storm rage on. The cold never bothered me anyway.

Context

This line is spoken by Elsa, played by Idina Menzel, in the film Frozen, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee (2013).

Elsa is a real life ice queen. Nobody understands her, including herself. She's never really had a handle on her icy powers, so she's been cooped up in her room since she was a child. When she's embarrassed at her coronation, she accidentally plunges her homeland into an eternal winter. And then Elsa uses this song to basically thumb her nose at the people who treat her like an outsider.

She's cool with it. Pun intended.

Where you've heard it

The song "Let it Go" was an instant hit when the movie released, and this quote became Elsa's universally known proclamation that "I'm different, and I'm owning it," quickly becoming a battle cry for the disenfranchised and misunderstood. Demi Lovato covered the song, Channing Tatum did a lip-synch in full costume and parodies popped up all over the web. And you've probably heard this song sung by everyone from toddlers to grandmothers.

The phrase made its way onto sweaters too, of course, and it's a clever rebuttal to use the next time someone points out that you forget your coat on a cold day.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Feeling a little out of place in the world? It's okay. We all do. Might as well own it.
