Speaker: Christina Aguilera

"I'm a genie in a bottle, baby."

I'm a genie in a bottle, baby. Gotta rub me the right way, honey.

Context

This line is from the song "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera, from the album Christina Aguilera (1999).

It was #1 in America, #1 in the UK, and one of the best-selling songs on the planet in 1999. Yeah, this song definitely rubbed Christian Aguilera the right way. She was actually only eighteen when "Genie in a Bottle" hit the charts, so there was some controversy about whether she was old enough to be singing such sexually suggestive lyrics. Aguilera said whatevs, claiming that it's about a sassy girl who's playing hard-to-get and actually wants a sincere relationship. Hmm, let's see if the video supports that thesis.

Where you've heard it

You've probably heard this… everywhere, really. We still hear Christina crooning these lines in the grocery store, and you probably do, too. If you're cool, you might've also heard the mash-up version that mixes the song with "Hard to Explain" by the Stokes. Missed it? Now's your chance to be cool. Most recently, you might've caught Aguilera's signature chorus during the 2014 US Open, whenever...Eugenie Bouchard played. Get it? Genie? Eugenie? Yeah… you get it.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Sexually suggestive pop songs specifically designed to please the masses can't possibly be pretentious.
