Speaker: Jesus

"Golden Rule"

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Context

In case you forgot the big ending to Jesus's hit Sermon on the Mount back in the Book of Matthew (Matthew 7:12 to be precise), here's how it goes: "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."

Jesus recaps it for you in his Sermon on the Plain in Luke, Chapter 6. Here, he condenses things a bit into a quote you may be more familiar with: "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

In other words, don't treat other people like dirt.

Where you've heard it

It's known as the Golden Rule, which is on inspirational posters in churches, classrooms, and temples all around the world.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This one deserves negative points on the pretentious-meter.
