Source: When a Stranger Calls

Speaker: Curt Duncan

Have you checked the children?

Context

This line is spoken by a creepy voice on the phone, Curt Duncan, played by Tony Beckley, in the film When a Stranger Calls, directed by Fred Walton (1979).

In the era before caller ID, prank phone calls were a lot more common. They could be heavy breathers from across the country, or crazed killers calling from inside the house. It's the latter in the film When a Stranger Calls. A stranger calls the worst baby sitter ever, Jill Johnson (played by Carol Kane), and taunts her by hissing, "Have you checked the children?" No, she hasn't. And by the time she does, they're dead.

We told you she was the worst babysitter ever.

Where you've heard it

You hear this from prank callers who are too unoriginal to come up with their own jokes, or if you're babysitting late into the night.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not pretentious, but scary enough to warrant a phone call to the police.
