Speaker: Grail Knight

"He chose poorly."

Walter Donovan: Which one is it?

Grail Knight: You must choose. But choose wisely, as the true grail will bring you life, and the false grail will take it from you.

[...] (Doctor Elsa chooses the grail for Walter Donovan, and he shrivels away to nothing.)

Grail Knight: He chose poorly.

Context

This line is spoken by the Grail Knight, played by Robert Eddison, in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, directed by Steven Spielberg (1989).

Indiana Jones and his dad are on a mission to stop the Holy Grail from getting into the wrong hands—a.k.a. some Nazis who want to wield its power for eeeeevil. Seriously though, the Grail is supposed to have healing powers, so everybody wants it.

When Indy finally makes his way into the cave where the Grail is, he finds a Knight who's been guarding it for so long that he's barely able to lift his sword to stop anyone from taking it. As the Knight's trying to convince Indy to take over his job so he can finally get out of that cave, two of the trouble-making Nazis that Indiana has been running from show up.

Long story short, the Grail Knight tells them they better pick the right grail—because picking the wrong one is lethal. The dude isn't a historian like Indiana Jones, so things don't end well for him.

Where you've heard it

If you're a How I Met Your Mother fan, you might remember this line from the episode called "Knight Vision." But the most exciting spoof has to be this one from Anna Kendrick.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Even the Grail Knight said this with a bit of snark, because that German dude was super pretentious. Use this one light-heartedly, and you won't lose any friends.
