Source: "Tiny Dancer"

Speaker: Elton John

Hold me closer, Tony Danza.

Context

This is a misquoted line from the song "Tiny Dancer," sung by Elton John on the album Madman Across the Water (1971).

Okay, we'll go with you on this. It does really sound like Elton John is asking actor Tony Danza to pull him in for a nice, tight snuggle. But once you know the name of the song is "Tiny Dancer," we're guessing that you're gonna hear those lyrics a little differently. If that doesn't convince you, then you should also know that the fabulous Tony Danza didn't start appearing on film or TV until the late 70s, which would make it pretty tough for Sir Elton to write a song about him in 1971. Timelines do not lie.

Still, there is something kind of sweet about imagining Angela singing this to Tony after everyone has gone to bed in the Bower household. Who's the Boss for life!

Where you've heard it

This lyric is pretty famous for being misheard (and mis-sung) at many a karaoke nights. Our apologies to Elton John.

Additional Notable References:

  • Phoebe on Friends totally thought this was all about the guy on Who's the Boss.
  • Tony Danza himself has to assure folks that this song was not written about him in the web series "Scott and Zander's Crazy Night."

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Adorably misquoting lyrics is pretty much the opposite of pretentious. You just keep on singing your heart out, Tony Danza!
