"I came in like a wrecking ball"

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was break me

Context

This line was sung by Miley Cyrus in the song "Wrecking Ball," written by Dr. Luke, Mozella, Kiyanu Kim, Stephan Moccio, Sacha Skarbek, and Cirkut, from the album Bangerz (2013).

In "Wrecking Ball," Miley Cyrus says goodbye to Mickey Mouse forever as the former Hannah Montana turned into a beautiful, vulnerable breakup song queen. The song was originally meant for Beyoncé, but Miley Cyrus snapped it up and turned it into a huge hit, even performing it on SNL. And along the way, she spawned a generation of imitators who hit up their local construction yards to croon away on a wrecking ball wearing next to nothing.

Tacky fans aside, "Wrecking Ball" is a dramatic song about how Miley wants to connect and communicate with the person she is in love with. But he decided to build a big old wall and throw in a moat and some fierce alligators to keep Miley out of his emotional life. That's pretty sad.

Breakups suck, but a good breakup song, like "Wrecking Ball," can be a nice break from bad feels. Just don't operate a crane or actual wrecking ball unless you have a demolition permit.

Where you've heard it

"Wrecking Ball" was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and you probably heard it if you turned on a radio or sat in a public place in 2013 or 2014. Miley Cyrus also performed on virtually all the major award shows and talk shows, like Ellen, the American Music Awards, and even the venerable MTV Unplugged. (We didn't know that was still a thing, but apparently it is.)

In a surprising interview, 50 Cent said that "Wrecking Ball" is his go-to karaoke song. Because doing "In Da Club" or "Candy Shop" would be too much of an ego trip, we guess.

Even Pikachu got in on the action.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

The song is pretty good, but the meme it has spawned has gotten a little stale after a few years, so maybe quote "We Can't Stop" if you want to show Miley some love.
