Speaker: Maria

"I do not know how to kiss, or I would kiss you."

I do not know how to kiss, or I would kiss you. Where do the noses go?

Context

This line is spoken by Maria (played by Ingrid Bergman) in the movie For Whom the Bell Tolls, directed by Sam Wood (1943).

This epic adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel cleaned up at the Oscars back in the day, winning Academy Awards for Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman—both of whom Hemingway hand-picked for the roles. Like the original book, the movie gives us the tragic tale of Robert Jordan. Jordan's an American fighting in the Spanish Civil War who falls in love with a Spanish girl named Maria while on a mission to blow up a bridge. Maria gives us this quote right before one of the most memorable kisses in movie history. We guess they figured out the nose issue.

Where you've heard it

This particular line doesn't get too many shout-outs, but Hemingway's original title sure does. Let us not forget that famous episode of Pokemon "For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll," and of course the episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air called "For Whom the Wedding Bells Toll." That's some pretty strange company for Hemingway, we know.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Anything about the basic mechanics of kissing isn't pretentious; it's just instructional.
