"I done another bad thing."

Lennie said, "George."

"Yeah?"

"I done another bad thing."

"It don't make no difference," George said, and he fell silent again.

Context

And there you have it: the most depressing lines of literature ever.

Ish.

We're at the end of Of Mice and Men, and Lennie knows he messed up...but we're pretty sure he doesn't understand the extent to which he's been getting in the way of his and George's dreams. George is crushed, but less by the fact that Lennie is harshing his mellow and more by the fact that he knows what he has to do. (Just read the last chapter of the book to find out what that is.)

Where you've heard it

We really hope you've never heard this conversation before. If you have, good luck paying off those therapy bills.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We feel bad even putting a pretentious scale on this one. We need to remember to make "0" an option next time.
