Source: Al Gore

Speaker: Al Gore

I invented the internet.

Context

This misquoted line was spoken by Al Gore in an interview with Wolf Blitzer (March 8, 1999).

Have you noticed how every webpage has © Al Gore in the corner? That's because Al Gore invented the internet, and every webpage has to credit him for it.

Don't see it? Look harder. It's in the lower-right corner of every webpage in really small print.

Still don't see it? That's because it isn't true. And Gore didn't quite say this.

When Al Gore was vying for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1999 he told silver fox Wolf Blitzer, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet." What Gore did was help approve funding for projects that eventually became the internet, but many people interpreted this as him taking credit for the whole thing, so they shortened it to "I invented the internet."

Why couldn't Al have invented an accurate method of voting, too?

Where you've heard it

You hear this time any political figure makes a huge claim that you know they can't possibly back up.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

The misquote makes Al Gore look like an 11 on the pretentious meter. The actual quote is slightly better. Slightly.
