Source: Body Heat

Speaker: Matty Walker

You're not too smart, are you? I like that in a man.

Context

This line is spoken by Matty Walker, played by Kathleen Turner in the film Body Heat, directed by Lawrence Kasdan (1981).

It's lust at first sight for seedy, small town lawyer Ned Racine on this warm, sultry night in Florida. Smoldering femme fatale Matty Walker just sauntered by, and he's caught in her seductive spell. Ned follows her to the beach and tries to make small talk with some cringe-worthy pick-up lines.

Matty says coolly, "You're not too smart, are you? I like that in a man." Harsh, girl.

This is actually a pretty prophetic statement, considering how she ropes poor Ned into her evil, murderous plot.

Fun fact: In reality, this scene was less hot than it looked. Although Body Heat was filmed on location in Florida, the weather was unusually chilly. It was so cold that actors had to suck on ice cubes between takes so you couldn't see their breath when delivering lines, and water was sprayed on their skin to look like sweat.

Not an ideal beach day, to say the least.

Where you've heard it

If you're an aspiring actor or actress, you may have heard this line in a drama class. But most likely, a classic movie buff may have pulled this on you during a first date if it was going well.

This line is also used in a quite lengthy article about film noir. Get ready to learn about camera angles.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

There's no way around it—saying this to anyone screams, "I think I'm better than you." Referencing the movie itself isn't really pretentious though. Just…pick a different line.
