Speaker: Cristal Connors

I used to love doggy chow.

Context

This famous line is spoken by Cristal Connors, played by Gina Gershon, in the masterpiece Showgirls (directed by Paul Verhoeven, 1995).

Showgirls is full of quotable lines. This is the only one of them we can discuss without using up our yearly budget for black censor bars and asterisks.

When head showgirl Cristal Connors takes promising young newcomer Nomi Malone (played by former Jessie Spano, Elizabeth Berkley) out to eat, Nomi doesn't know what any of the food is at the Vegas restaurant—either because she's illiterate and can't read the menu or because she's only ever eaten hamburgers or brown rice and vegetables, the official meal of the Showgirls diet.

Nomi says brown rice and vegetables is worse than dog food, prompting Cristal to reveal that she's eaten dog food before. "I used to love Doggy Chow," she confesses. Nomi responds, "I used to love Doggy Chow too." And the two frenemies become a little more fren and a little less emies, cementing their bond with a little tortilla chip fist bump.

9 out of 10 showgirls prefer Doggy Chow to the leading dog food brand.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if you've ever needed a BFF bonding moment with a fellow showgirl, you're at a Rocky Horror-esque Showgirls screening, or if you've actually tried dog food before. Insert brand of choice.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Honestly, we can't think of anything less pretentious than eating dog food—and admitting it.
