Source: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Speaker: Buffy Summers

If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

Context

This line was spoken by Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, written by Rob Des Hotel and Dean Batali (1997-2003).

This clever little quip is from the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, when our titular heroine still had bangs and hadn't smooched either Spike or Angel. However, her sense of humor is intact and, most of all, Buffy just wants to have a normal high school social life, while fighting the undead.

She wants to go out with Owen, a seemingly sensitive boy who is into Emily Dickinson, but also likes taking unnecessary risks. When Giles (played by Anthony Head), her mentor and school librarian, asks for her help in stopping a prophecy about a freaky vampire called the Anointed One, she shrugs, uses this one-liner, and goes off with Owen.

But Owen turns out to be a really morbid dude, saying that almost getting killed by vampires was the best night of his life. Buffy doesn't want to be responsible for his death if he pulls a stunt like that again so they break up, and he's never seen on the show again.

Where you've heard it

Occasionally, a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan might use this quote if they're about do something that needs their undivided attention. Or maybe someone is feeling nostalgic for the 90s and wants to use "beeper" in a sentence again.

And if you need something to do while waiting for the apocalypse, you can always find out which Buffy character you are.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This is definitely a witty quip, and the beeper/pager part of it gives it a vintage feel. Quote away.
