Source: "Wannabe"

Speaker: Spice Girls

"If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends."

If you wanna be my lover
You gotta get with my friends
Make it last forever
Friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover
You have got to give
Taking is too easy
But that's the way it is

Context

This line is from the song "Wannabe," written by Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Matt Rowe, and Richard Stannard, from the album Spice (1996).

The Spice Girls were all about girl power, so it made sense that their debut single be all about—what else?—girl power. "Wannabe" is basically a song about the kind of mate the Spice Girls are looking for. Mainly just a normal guy who's got his act together, doesn't play games, and doesn't throw a hissyfit about stuff that's in the past. Oh, and most importantly, he totally gets along with her friends. Seriously, guys may come and go, but girlfriends are forever. Sisters before misters, y'all.

Where you've heard it

If a girl ever tells you this, she either a) seriously loves the Spice Girls or b) really, really wants to you get along with her friends. Use that information accordingly.

Additional Notable References:

  • Of course, Glee had to do a cover of this song.
  • King Julian (Sasha Baron Cohen) performed a version of this song in Madagascar 3.
  • But what do girls really want? Quality education. An end to violence and child marriage. Equal pay for equal work. Preach ladies.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Setting standards in a relationship isn't pretentious. That's just sensible. You go, girl. Girl power and stuff.
