Speaker: Evelyn Couch

Face it, girls. I'm older and I have more insurance.

Context

This line is spoken by Evelyn Couch (played by Kathy Bates) in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, directed by Jon Avnet (1991).

It's not just a movie for moms, we promise. Fried Green Tomatoes is a great flick, starring Kathy Bates as Evelyn Couch, a dumped-upon housewife. When Evelyn befriends a dying old lady named Ninny (Jessica Tandy), she's inspired by Ninny's stories of Ruth and Idgie, a couple of ladies who lived life on their own terms.

Revved up on Ninny's stories, Evelyn doesn't take it lying down when a couple of young girls steal her parking spot, telling her that they're "younger and faster." As revenge, she slams her car into theirs over and over again saying, "Face it, girls. I'm older and I have more insurance."

Where you've heard it

Well, maybe you read the original book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, by Fannie Flagg. You might've also caught the joke Crow made on Mystery Science Theater 3000 about Fried Green Tomatoes-themed parties. Don't laugh. We have these at Shmoop HQ every other week.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We give it a 1 for pretentiousness, but if this were an awesomeness scale we'd give it a 10.
