In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart.

Context

Very few people in recorded history have gone through more despair and hardship, or been subjected to more awful living conditions, or been forced to witness from a tiny window, day in and day out, the wide variety of atrocities that can be committed by humankind...than Anne Frank.

And yet, despite all the evidence to the contrary, she was able to step back and see some good in people.

That's what makes this quote so inspiring. If Anne could believe that mankind is basically good, then…heck, maybe we are. No one in the world has had more of a right to condemn our species, and she did the opposite.

Makes you feel a little guilty for being so hard on people, huh?

Where you've heard it

As beautiful as the sentiment is, the quote isn't brought up in casual conversation too often. It has, however, graced a large number of decorative throw pillows and is all over the place on Tumblr.

If you have your driver's license, you may also have heard it while muttering it under your breath, as you attempted to convince yourself that the moron driving 10 mph in front of you was not deserving of your wrath.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Just no.
