K-Mart sucks.

Context

This line was spoken by Ray Babbitt (played by Dustin Hoffman) in Rain Man (1988), directed by Barry Levinson.

One thing that ticks Charlie Babbitt off about his older autistic brother, Ray Babbitt, is his love for the discount clothes and everything-under-the-sun retailer, K-Mart. Along with watching The People's Court every day, it's part of the strict series of routines in his life.

But even though Charlie just wanted to spend time with Ray—so he could get his share of their dad's inheritance so Charlie could pay off a loan for some Lamborghinis he failed to sell—they end up bonding. Ray's a whiz at sums, so they make a killing counting cards in Vegas, and Charlie even teaches him to slow dance.

At the end of the movie, Ray has to go back to the mental institution where he was at in the beginning of Rain Man, but something's changed. He and Charlie have a relationship and can even make little jokes about K-Mart to get on Dr. Bruner's nerves.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this quote when a K-Mart shopper's angry that the store doesn't have a particular item. It's usually followed by them storming off to Target, Walmart, or a more specialty retailer.

This quote's the title of a 2014 AOL Finance piece about how K-Mart is losing employees, customers, and money. Yikes.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We're with Ray here: K-Mart isn't our one-stop shopping mecca.
