Source: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Speaker: Butch Cassidy

Kid, the next time I say, "Let's go someplace like Bolivia," let's go someplace like Bolivia.

Context

This line is spoken by Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, directed by George Roy Hill (1969).

This quote comes from the classic buddy Western about two smooth-talkin' bank robbers who eventually beat it to Bolivia to avoid the heat (the legal heat, that is). Butch delivers this line to Sundance when a posse has cornered them on a cliff and they're forced to jump into the river below to escape. Eventually, they do make it to Bolivia, but things don't work out too well there, either. It's hard out there for a bank robber.

Where you've heard it

Maybe you heard it spoken by this slightly awkward trivia host on YouTube. The quote also gets a shout-out in this Lonely Planet guide to Bolivia. So if you're planning a Bolivian vacation anytime soon, you're sure to see it.

Even if you've never seen or heard this quote anywhere, you've at least seen the actor who said it wearing silly outfits on the labels of various salad dressings.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Quoting Butch Cassidy will actually make you a better person.
