Source: Jurassic Park

Speaker: Dr. Ian Malcolm

Life finds a way.

Context

This line is from the film Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg (1993).

If you've seen the movie, you know that death finds a way, too—especially if you're trying to hide from a T-Rex in an outhouse.

This line is delivered by Dr. Malcolm, the brainiac of the bunch. He's trying to explain to the guys who run the park that, no matter what they do to try to control and contain the dinosaurs, those things are gonna find a way to thrive and survive. Specifically, just because the scientists have genetically engineered all the creatures to be the same gender doesn't mean they won't still figure out a way to reproduce.

My, that is a nifty trick.

The line manages to be at the same time profound and ominous. But… more ominous than profound (mostly because it's raining and they're playing that creepy music in the background).

Where you've heard it

It's totally true. Life does find a way. Just ask boredpanda. They've got some awfully resilient plants they want you to check out. The line has been used to promote a show on CBS, as well as to discuss the evolution of… snack food? Hmm… maybe we share a common ancestor with the carrot stick. Who knows?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Actually, we don't think this quote is very pretentious at all. But it's delivered by a character named "Dr. Ian Malcolm." Really, Jurassic Park? You sure you didn't want to go with "Professor Mortimer J. Willingsworth III?" Please.
