Source: Project Runway

Speaker: Tim Gunn

Make it work.

Context

This line is Tim Gunn's catchphrase in Project Runway (2004-present).

Tim Gunn is the guardian angel of Project Runway and has appeared every season to mentor contestants as they try to break into the cutthroat fashion industry via the cutthroat world of reality television. He plays the role of a good tutor, but is 100 times more fabulous than the person who got you through calculus or organic chemistry.

This is where his iconic line comes into play. A lot of the challenges in Project Runway are really crazy, with aspiring designers having to make outfits from outlandish things. Tim helps each contestant realize their potential as a designer, despite having limits on what they can use for an outfit.

If you can make a dress out of sausage or celery, then coming up with clothing ideas for H and M or Banana Republic will be a walk in the park. And having a fashion fairy godfather like Tim doesn't hurt.

Where you've heard it

You've said this to a friend when they're about to go out on a town, but haven't done laundry in a while, so they have to improvise clothing-wise.

Additional Notable References:

  • This line shows up in the title of an article where Tim Gunn talks about designing for plus-sized women.
  • Tim Gunn talks about the evolution of his catchphrase in this article. "Make it work" is much catchier than "this isn't working for you, start something different," but both quotes are solid advice for anyone.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's pretty awesome to be confident in what you're wearing or designing, so feel free to quote this line as you rock whatever you want to rock.
