Source: Tarzan the Ape Man

Speaker: Tarzan

Me, Tarzan. You, Jane.

Context

This misquoted line is spoken by Tarzan, played by Johnny Weissmuller, in the film Tarzan the Ape Man, directed by W.S. Van Dyke (1932).

Tarzan, Tarzan, Tarzan of the Jungle. Strong as he can be! Watch out for that tree! Oh wait, that's George of the Jungle. We've misquoted our misquote….

Anyway, Tarzan the Ape Man lives in the trees, with apes! Jane Parker (Maureen O'Sullivan) is just your average, everyday woman—not used to apes. Or men. Or trees. When Tarzan protects Jane from a scary (to her) ape, she attempts to introduce herself, but English is not Tarzan's first language. Tarzan barely has a language. Comedy ensues as Tarzan tries to understand the meaning of proper names and pronouns.

However, he never says the exact line "Me, Tarzan. You, Jane." He basically just says "Tarzan" and "Jane" over and over again until she can't take it anymore and wants to scream and run away. Him, annoying. She, Jane.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if a jungle man is trying to seduce you.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

English is a hard language to learn. Tarzan grasps the basics pretty quickly, even if he didn't say this exact line.
