Source: Almost Famous

Speaker: Dennis Hope

If you think Mick Jagger will be out there trying to be a rock star at age 50, then you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

Context

This line was spoken by Dennis Hope (played by Jimmy Fallon) in Almost Famous (2000), written and directed by Cameron Crowe.

Before he was having the time of his life on late night TV, Jimmy Fallon played Stillwater band manager Dennis Hope, a.k.a. the ultimate corporate sellout. He doesn't care about the music—just the bottom line as he charters private jets for coast-to-coast tours. And he doesn't leave room for the band's top groupie and muse, Penny Lane.

This quote shows just how full of it Dennis is, and it's particularly hilarious considering the fact that Mick Jagger would go on to continue touring well past 50, and the Rolling Stones even released a blues album in 2016. Because retirement is for athletes and office workers, not rock stars.

But thankfully Dennis quits after a super scary airplane ride where the band reveals their deepest, darkest secrets. He may have committed manslaughter, though…

Where you've heard it

You've heard a variation of this quote every time some old band or artist announces a tour, usually in a complaining tone of voice. But hey, maybe they'll fill up huge venues like London's Wembley Stadium for three straight nights. Who says that "old" bands can't keep living their rock star dreams?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote really annoys us. If Mick Jagger's healthy and feeling up to it, he should tour 'til he's 100 and give even more generations of rock fans a chance to bask in his glory.
