Source: Singin' in the Rain

Speaker: Lina Lamont

What do they think I am, dumb or something? Why, I make more money than Calvin Coolidge! Put together!

Context

This line is spoken by Lina Lamont, played by Jean Hagen, in the film Singin' in the Rain, directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen (1952).

Some people should remain silent, and Lina Lamont is one of them. When silent movies turn to talkies, Lina's voice is dubbed over by Kathy Selden's (Debbie Reynolds).

But that's not the only place where Kathy is replacing Lina. Lina's partner, Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly), is falling in love with Kathy, too. And somewhere in here, we think, there's some singing and some rain.

When Don announces to Lina that he loves Kathy, plans to marry her, and that Kathy will be a lead in her next movie, Lina flies into a jealous rage. She yells that no one will make a fool of her! "What do they think I am, dumb or something? Why, I make more money than Calvin Coolidge! Put together!"

They don't need a publicity campaign to make Lina look dumb. She's doing that just fine by herself.

Where you've heard it

You've probably never heard this, unless you've traveled back in time to the Coolidge administration.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We're not sure what wealth has to do with intelligence… just look at Donald Trump. So if you're being serious while saying this quote, it won't prove that you're smart. In fact, it kind of proves the opposite.
