Speaker: Night Ranger

"You're motoring. What's your price for flight?"

You're motoring
What's your price for flight?
In finding Mister Right
You'll be alright tonight

Context

This line was sung by Night Ranger in the song "Sister Christian," written by Kelly Keagy, from the album Midnight Madness (1983).

"Sister Christian" is kind of the epitome of an '80s power ballad and has been spoofed everywhere from Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights to multiple episodes of American Dad! It's a staple every time a show or movie wants to remind the audience of the '80s. As if we could forget.

But "Sister Christian" was actually a pretty personal song for Night Ranger's frontman Kelly Keagy. He wrote it about his teenage sister, Christy. Keagy just wanted her to make good life choices and find true love while not growing up too fast.

So "Sister Christian" is just a sweet song that happens to have a great guitar solo. Nice.

Where you've heard it

If you grew up in the '80s, you'll probably remember that the "Sister Christian" music video—featuring actual high school students—was constantly played on MTV, and you probably saw it way too many times. And if you're younger, it's more likely that you've heard it while watching a movie, sitcom, or cruising around Vice City in Grand Theft Auto.

Additional Notable References:

  • "Sister Christian" provides the background music for a drug deal featuring supporting characters in Paul Thomas Anderson's breakout movie Boogie Nights. It really sets up that 1980's mood. Christy must be really proud now.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

People don't really say "motoring" anymore, so save this quote for '80s karaoke night.
