Source: My Cherie Amour

Speaker: Stevie Wonder

"My cherie amour, little one that I adore."

My cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore
You're the only girl that my heart beats for
How I wish you were mine

Context

This line was sung by Stevie Wonder in the song "My Cherie Amour," written by Stevie Wonder, Sylvia Moy, and Henry Cosby, from the album My Cherie Amour (1969).

Decades before Taylor Swift was dropping a breakup song on every album, a young soul singer named Stevie Wonder sang one called "My Cherie Amour" that hit number 4 on the US Billboard Charts. The song began as a love song called "Oh My Marsha" about his girlfriend at the Michigan School for the Blind, but the lyrics and title were changed once the young lovers called it quits.

The entire song is filled with descriptions of Stevie's feelings towards his ex, and how he wishes that she would notice him again. Sad.

Where you've heard it

"My Cherie Amour" is a popular first dance song at weddings, and you may have also heard it in the films Silver Linings Playbook and Almost Famous, where it triggers bipolar episodes and is used in the background of someone's stomach getting pumped, respectively. Yeah, this song is actually pretty messy and complicated.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This is a really cute term of endearment, but don't forget its context of sadness.
