"Do you have any Grey Poupon?"

Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?

Context

This line is spoken in a Grey Poupon TV commercial (1981).

The 1980s were about shoulder pads, neon leggings, synthesized music, and… mustard? Only plebs were eating that yellow stuff in 1981. True connoisseurs had moved on to mustard that was a little seedier, richer, and full-bodied.

In an iconic TV ad, a man's chauffer removes a jar of Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard from the glove compartment (what else does he keep in there, ketchup?) so that he can spread it on his lunch. Another fancy vehicle (also chauffeured) pulls aside, and that man rolls down his window and asks, "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?" "But of course!" the first man replies, and passes the mustard between the vehicles.

A friendship and a pre-Internet viral sensation is born.

Where you've heard it

There have been variations of this ad for the last thirty years. Some of them end with the original man hogging the mustard, some of them involve a high-speed chase, and a 2014 parody video made fun of the classy mustard's make-funnable name. Who knew mustard could be so exciting?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If you have a driver and you keep mustard in your glove compartment, you're pretentious… whether you share your fancy mustard or not.
