Diabetes wasn't yet a national crisis when Def Leppard implored, "pour some sugar on me" to its millions of fans in 1987.

But ever since, the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes has been steadily climbing annually. Is Def Leppard to blame? Probably not, because the "sugar" in this case probably doesn't mean something you add to your coffee in the morning.
