Source: Oh, Pretty Woman

Speaker: Roy Orbison

Pretty woman, give your smile to me.

Context

This line is from the song "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison, from the album Pretty Woman (1964).

It might've been Roy's last big hit, but at least he went out with a bang. Amazingly, this song was written super-fast. Roy and his songwriting partner Bill Dees were jamming in the living room when Roy's wife Claudette walked through on her way to the store. The next thing you know, Roy sang these famous lines, and the song was finished by the time Claudette got back with the stuff.

Where you've heard it

We would find it highly surprising if you hadn't heard this song on the radio, on TV, in the movies—something.

You might also remember it from the Richard Gere/Julia Roberts movie that borrowed its title, or (let's be honest) from the soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

He might be a little demanding of the pretty woman, but Roy isn't being a snot.
