Source: "Mustang Sally"

Speaker: Wilson Pickett

All you want to do is ride around, Sally.

Context

This line is from the song "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett, from the album Mustang Sally (1966).

Okay, so Wilson Pickett didn't write these lines, and he wasn't even the first person to record it—that was actually influential songwriter Mack Rice. The song started as a joke, when a singer named Della Reese said she really wanted a Mustang. Even if Wilson Pickett wasn't around when the song was born, it was his cover that made it a hit. It's almost always Pickett's smoky voice we hear belting out the funky chorus.

And here it is: Wilson Picket… live.

Where you've heard it

If you watch Glee, then you probably saw the episode where the kids breathe new life into these lines. You can also hear the song's famous chorus on an episode of My Name is Earl and in the movie The Commitments, which is about the struggles of an Irish soul band.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Nothing sung by Wilson Pickett is pretentious—nothing. (Ya got that?)
