"Vould you like to have a roll in ze hay?"

Hallo. Vould you like to have a roll in ze hay? It's fun! Roll, roll, roll in ze hay!

Context

This famous line is spoken by Inga, played by Teri Garr, in Young Frankenstein (directed by Mel Brooks, 1974).

Dr. Frankenstein must take a hay ride to the castle, but there's already someone in the wagon—a sexy young blonde named Inga. She introduces herself, then says, "Vould you like to have a roll in ze hay?"

Dr. Frankenstein is taken aback by her forward offer, but she literally means rolling back and forth in the hay.

The doc is starving, and he thinks Inga is going to offer him a sandwich on a bed of straw. Instead, she gives him nothing, leaving him feeling stiffed.

Where you've heard it

This punny line is the inspiration for the song of the same name in the Broadway musical adaptation of Young Frankenstein called The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein, which starred Karen from Will & Grace, the creepy pharmacist from Desperate Housewives, and, as Inga, Tony-award winning actress Sutton Foster.

Oh, and if 11 Down is "Roll in ze hay enthusiast," the answer is Inga.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

There's nothing wrong about wanting a sandwich. Wait, you mean this joke isn't about a dinner roll?
