Shake it like a Polaroid picture!

Context

This line is from the song "Hey Ya" by Outkast from the album Speakerboxxx (2003).

Before "twerking" entered common (body) language, people were shaking it like a Polaroid picture.

The hit single "Hey Ya!" was the dance anthem of 2003. It had a killer music video (which you had to watch on TV—the horror!) and an addictive hook in which Andre Benjamin, a.k.a. Andre 3000, wants to "see you on your baddest behavior!"

And he doesn't mean sleeping until 2:00PM or leaving the toilet seat up. He wants to see you shake what your momma gave you.

P.S. Never heard of Polaroid? It was instant film that you didn't have to bring to the photo store to be developed. (Imagine that!) People liked to shake the picture to make it show up quicker. But, much like blowing into a Nintendo cartridge, shaking didn't actually do anything and could actually be harmful to the picture.

Where you've heard it

Anywhere you went in 2003. After that: family reunions, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs…and anywhere where an overeager DJ wanted everyone on the dance floor.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

There's absolutely nothing pretentious about shakin' your booty any way you wanna shake it.
