Speaker: Christine Daae

"Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime."

Christine: Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime. Say the word and I will follow you.
Christine & Raoul: Share each day with me, each night, each morning.
Christine: Say you love me.
Raoul: You know I do.
Christine & Raoul: Love me—that's all I ask of you.

Context

This line is from the song "All I Ask of You" by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, and Richard Stilgoe from the musical The Phantom of the Opera (1986).

This song comes near the end of Act I as Christine, the young opera singer (and the Phantom's beloved crush), and Raoul, the handsome viscount, profess their love for each other. The Phantom is not amused.

This song is actually pretty darn beautiful. Christine and Raoul both tell each other how in love they are, and offer up some pretty hefty promises along the way. They'll share one love and one lifetime. Every day and every night. That's no biggie, right? After all, eternal and undying devotion is all they're asking of each other. Easy peasy.

Of course, the Phantom echoes this song later in the show, confessing his own love, and hoping to persuade Christine to choose him instead. Are you done crying yet?

Where you've heard it

Bring out this quote anytime you want to lay on the romance. When a lifetime of love is all you're asking, this song never fails.

Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson also recorded a version of this song and, yes, we cried a little. Okay, a lot.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Yes, you're asking someone to devote their entire life and world to you. It's a little bit pretentious. But, we think your better half will be too busy wiping the tears from his or her eyes to care. Swoon.
