Source: "Diamonds"

Speaker: Rihanna

Shine bright like a diamond.

Context

This line is from the song "Diamonds," written by Sia Furler, Benjamin Levin, Mikkel S. Eriksen, and Tor Erik Hermansen, and performed by Rihanna, from the album Unapologetic (2012).

Diamonds are forever...and an inspiration to pop music everywhere, from an incomparable Shirley Bassey song to Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to Kanye West's "Diamonds From Sierra Leone," which sampled the Bassey song and was decidedly anti-bling.

And in 2012, you couldn't walk past a restaurant, club, store, or retirement home (probably) without hearing "Diamonds" by Rihanna. It didn't hurt that another pop goddess, Sia, was the writer of the song and brought her track record of writing hit pop songs about shiny objects (like chandeliers) to the table.

But "Diamonds" is more than just a catchy chorus as Rihanna probes into a failed past relationship. Some critics and fans thought it was about Chris Brown, but we're not a tabloid, so let's not speculate on that. We'll just enjoy the music.

Where you've heard it

This song was definitely the earworm of 2012, so you would've had to completely avoid stores, restaurants, or anywhere but your own house to miss it.

And even Kanye West appeared on the remix of "Diamonds," revisiting the topic that gave him one of his first solo hits. He's less socially conscious but has more Fresh Prince references in this song.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Repetitive, maybe. But the hook from "Diamonds" is certainly not pretentious.
