Somebody stop me!

Context

This line is spoken by the Mask, played by Jim Carrey, in the movie The Mask, directed by Chuck Russell (1994).

When mild-mannered bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss slaps on a mysterious mask, he becomes... um... the Mask, a cartoonish trickster who has all the powers of the Norse trickster god Loki. The Mask is kind of a wild card, but like most superheroes, he uses his powers to beat up bad guys and to get the girl (of course). Played outrageously by Jim Carrey when he wasn't yet ashamed of overacting, this quote comes when the Mask is looking at himself in a mirror as he gets ready for a night out on the town.

Don't try to stop him. Just check out the clip here.

Where you've heard it

Back in the '90s, when Jim Carrey's star was burning bright, you mostly heard people doing their best version of this or the Mask's other tagline ("Smokin'!") in the halls of high schools or on second-rate talks shows. As far as we can tell, the most recent time somebody dared step to Carrey's comic glory was on Spike TV's Blue Mountain State, when pumped-up football player Thad Williams nailed it. (Here's a clip.) This line also gets a shout-out on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a show that proves that everyone needs best friends that are robots.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

A Jim Carrey quote from the '90s... hmm, that's kind of the opposite of pretentious, right?
