Source: Son of a Preacher Man

Speaker: Dusty Springfield

The only one who could ever reach me was the son of a preacher man.

Context

This line is from the song "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield from the album Dusty in Memphis (1969).

This preacher's son is one sly guy. Turns out those little innocent strolls around the garden...uh, not so innocent.

In between chatting about the weather, foreign policy, and other parent-approved topics, he's being quite the little Casanova and practicing the art of seduction. And our speaker is eating it right up, saying that the preacher's son is the only one who could ever reach her heart and teach her about love.

Where you've heard it

Hopefully not from your kid, or else you're in for a super awkward conversation with the preacher man….

The song got its second wind from the 1994 movie, Pulp Fiction. If you're not a Tarantino fan, though, you may remember it as the lullaby Jan sings to her daughter in The Office.

Quick PSA: we think singing to your children is important, but there are some songs that just don't make good lullabies. This is one of them. Please don't sing this to your child. Please.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If you're quoting this song in everyday life, you get a solid 4. If you're singing it as a lullaby, your pretentious factor goes down to a 1, but your "people we might call CPS on" factor skyrockets. Just a heads up.
