Source: Oh, God!

Speaker: God

The last miracle I did was the 1969 Mets. Before that, I think you have to go back to the Red Sea.

Context

This line is spoken by God (played by George Burns) in the film Oh, God!, directed by Carl Reiner (1977).

Joan Osborne—who sang "What if God Was One of Us?"—must have been a fan of Oh, God! This 1977 comedy stared cuddly old comedian George Burns as the Big G himself. In it, a grocery store manager meets a man who says he's God. In order to prove it, they do what all good Americans would do: they go to trial.

The movie is a lighthearted comedy featuring quips like, "The last miracle I did was the 1969 Mets. Before that, I think you have to go back to the Red Sea." The Red Sea, huh? We remember that miracle.

Where you've heard it

You might hear this quote if someone is talking about miracles, the Mets, or both. Sports writer Steven Travers wrote about the Mets' 1969 World Series victory in The 1969 Miracle Mets, using the George Burns quote from Oh, God! in the synopsis.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's not pretentious, but just try to pull this off at your next cocktail party. It won't go well—we promise.
