Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.

Context

This line is from the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (1847).

This Victorian classic tells the dark story of a bitter dude named Heathcliff, who gets all mad when his adopted sister Catherine (whom Heathcliff loves) marries a rich dude named Edgar. This quote comes from Catherine, and she actually says it about Heathcliff, not Edgar. It turns out that Catherine loves Heathcliff too, but she won't marry him because he's got no class. Heathcliff takes this as his cue to spend his life trying to ruin Edgar's. Good times.

Where you've heard it

You might've heard it in any of the many film adaptations of the book like this one, or maybe this one. Of course, we also recommend you dig for the quote in this graphic novel version.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's a wee bit melodramatic, eh? If you start talking about souls and using unusual sentence structure at our party, be prepared for some side-eye.
