"My mama told me, "You better shop around.""

My mama told me, 'You better shop around.'

Context

This line is from the song "Shop Around" by The Miracles, from the album Shop Around (1960).

Featuring legendary singer Smokey Robinson, the Miracles were Motown greats, with "Shop Around" being one of their many hits. Smokey and pals actually first recorded a way bluesier version of the song, which was popular in Detroit, Motown's hometown. Afterwards, they recorded the pop version that took America by storm—and probably tanked many engagements, as fiancées everywhere took Mama Robinson's advice.

Where you've heard it

Maybe you've heard the 1976 cover by Captain and Tennille. If not, do so by clicking here. It's worth it just for their outfits. The quote has also been used as the title of episodes of Perfect Strangers, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Married with Children.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You won't sound full of yourself, but you might sound a little uncommitted.
