"You're tearing me apart!"

You're tearing me apart! You, you say one thing, and he says another, and then everybody changes back again!

Context

Jim's sitting at the local police station after being brought in for public intoxication and underage drinking—scandalous, Shmoopers. Simply scandalous. His parents (and grandma) come to pick him up, and they're all in his face asking why he keeps messing up. He tries to hold it together, but ends up screaming this quote at them to shut them up. They just don't understand him. He's saying he feels torn apart metaphorically, since they're contradicting each other, and also figuratively, since he's acting out because he doesn't feel whole—he doesn't fit in.

His big-boy hormones have him all mixed up. Sounds like some major #teenangst.

Where you've heard it

From an episode of Spongebob to one of the best dubstep mash-ups you'll ever see. Thanks to a dangerously similar line in one of the worst movies of all time, The Room, this quote is as essential now as it was when Dean first made it famous. Teenagers, unite in your angst.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Thanks to people like Tommy Wiseau, nowadays this one's only reserved for laughs. Use it whenever you're talking to anyone named Lisa. (It's kind of a rule, actually.)
